    GO FIRST… when I was on a mission to overcome re GO FIRST… when I was on a mission to overcome reeeaaallly bad shyness years back, a friend suggested this to me and I gotta say it has been a tiny but consistent change that had a massive impact on my confidence but also on my overall life and how I see things in the world 🌎 The GO FIRST thing started really small... - I made sure I was the first one to smile when I was passing someone in the supermarket aisle who made eye contact - I was the first to say hi on a plane when I sat down next to a complete stranger. - I made the first move in striking up a conversation with someone next to me at the bar during a party. OK so we meet people all the time we’ll never see again BUT that person next to you MIGHT just become a lifelong friend or you might learn something valuable. Even if it’s a brief one off encounter its still a win-win situation. Here’s why... Ever noticed how someone’s face lights up when you make the first move and give them your attention - it’s a gift that make them feel good and makes you feel pretty damn amazing too 💥🌈 Also it’s an act of COURAGE and if you watched our #vetsuccessacademy Livecast on this you’ll know that courage is a muscle that needs to exercised every day to grow strong. Make the first move... smile first and you’ll be conditioning that courage muscle for when you need the courage to do the big things. Yeah but Alex what if they don’t smile back? Sometimes they don’t- and that’s ok. Maybe they’re having a bad day, some people just don’t want to connect. Don’t let that put you off or second guess yourself. Think of GOING FIRST as a gift you’re giving away. When you give a gift of appreciation you don’t expect a gift in return do you? Same applies. So give it a try…. And go first 😉

    You WILL make mistakes. There I said it. A big f You WILL make mistakes. There I said it. A big fear of young veterinarians and students is that they will make a mistake or make the wrong decision when treating a patient. The idea that you can go through your career and NEVER make the wrong decision clinically is actually pretty crazy. We all make assessments on patients and then decide on a course of action.. often with incomplete information. Plus we are human and not perfect- agreed? 👩🏼‍⚕️ The worst thing you can do when you have a critical patient in front of you is be paralysed by the fear of failure and make NO decision at all 🚫 The good news? Very few decisions are irreversible and as you know more about what is going on with a patient you can... change your treatment plan, ask a colleague for advice, look on VIN…keep seeking to do better but don’t let ‘I made a a mistake’ equal ‘I am failing’. Have I made mistakes treating patients? Hell yes! Many. I wouldn’t be the vet I am today without the lessons I learnt from the errors along the way and I could never have saved the lives of thousands of pets if I had been ruled by the fear of making a wrong decision 😉

He was freezing cold and wet and we didn’t think he would survive the night 😔 Check out Scotty now at the front right!! He now has a couple of other orphan koala mates to get up to mischief with 🐨🐨🐨 How incredible that someone had the kindness and compassion to stop and pick him up that day and get him to help. #nationalwildlifeday
    COURAGE! What would your life be like if you consi COURAGE! Sometimes you have to own the fear, listen to the belief others have in you, and take that leap. That was a time that tested me, and I emerged stronger and more accomplished because of it.
