Meet  Alex

Dr Alex Hynes is a Veterinarian, Author and Educator with an extraordinary passion for animals, life and veterinary work both as the hospital director of one of Australia’s busiest emergency pet hospitals, Animal Emergency Service in Queensland, and as an entrepreneur and media personality. Over a career of 17 years, including 5 years working in veterinary clinics in the UK and 12 years as an emergency surgeon and vet in Australia, Alex has shared her knowledge as a speaker at universities, vet conferences and dog shows all over the world. After a childhood in the Southern Highlands of NSW riding horses, milking cows and lambing sheep, she built her life and career around her love for animals and her desire to change the ways animals are cared for both at home and in the veterinary profession. “Animals are so precious in our lives because they are part of the family”, says Alex.

“Our furry friends are no longer kept outside the yard or at the back door; they live in our homes and sleep in our beds and every pet owner and member of the veterinary industry can, and should care for them the way they'd care for a human family member. I am so thrilled to share essential knowledge that so many of my clients and followers say, "I Wish I Knew."

About Animal Emergency Service

As the director of one of the largest after-hours hospital groups in Australia, Alex spends her days and nights treating the sickest of sick pets and wildlife in critical medical situations. As a surgeon, she is at the forefront of the emergency and critical care veterinary field around the country, giving lectures at universities and previously engaged as an examiner for the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) in the chapter of Emergency and Critical Care. Alex is also a beloved trainer and mentor to her peers and is particularly a role model for emerging female vets in a field where 80% of graduates entering veterinary medicine are women.

“Every day at the hospital is different and challenging, and one thing I know is that each individual that comes through our door is in urgent need of medical care. Being able to help those sick and injured animals is the most rewarding experience imaginable,” Alex says.

Alex was inspired by the vision of Animal Emergency Service to provide urgent medical care around the clock — moving on from the days when pet owners phoned their family vet in the middle of the night and hoped they were available. She joined AES in 2007 and now, as a director, is grateful every day to work in a hospital that practices the highest standard of patient care and values teamwork above all else.

A Holistic Vet's Life — Fitness Fiend, Mum, Dog Lover, Mentor

Alex embraces and inspires her 50,000 followers with a phenomenally well-rounded life, training in martial arts and marathon running, strength training, and horse riding — and most importantly of all, raising her beautiful young daughter, Victoria. She is also Mum to her stunning Samoyed dog Yoshi, who is considered one of the team at the hospital and Alex’s constant companion at public events. With a full and active lifestyle at Alex’s side, Yoshi is picking up quite a fan base of his own. Among Yoshi’s many talents, he is a much loved therapy dog at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane.
